GMO Test Options

There is no one-size-fits-all GMO test that fits every manufacturer and every product. Instead, you need to choose the right test or set of tests to meet your goals.

GMO Test Options

Many different types of GMOs can be found in the food chain at the seed, ingredient, and finished product level, and requirements vary according to what testing may be required.

Some labs may offer fairly extensive GMO testing, but others may not. Customer service experts at an experienced testing lab can help you identify the specific GMO tests you need.

GMO food/feed testing is based on some fundamental principles of genetic engineering and cellular physiology:

  • DNA: Addition of foreign DNA to the DNA of a host plant (genetic engineering)
  • Protein: Information encoded in DNA is translated into protein that performs the function determined by DNA instructions (cellular physiology)

Based on these foundations, two methods have been developed: genetic analysis (DNA analysis) and Immunological analysis (Protein analysis). There are currently three tests using these methods.

Genetic Analysis (DNA analysis)

Genetic analysis is a GMO test method that detects the presence of a transgene in the genome of a plant cell. The specific GMO test used in this method is called the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test.

The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR Test) copies a specific section of a plant's DNA billions of times to detect and quantify the foreign DNA (GMO) added to the plant's genome. It uses short pieces of DNA (primers) complementary to the GMO sequence to massively amplify and quantify GMOs. It is highly sensitive and specific, suitable for qualitative or quantitative testing.

Another method is immunoassay, also known as protein analysis. Immunological analysis, or immunoassay for short, is a GMO test method that detects proteins. Currently there are two types of GMO tests using this method: Strip Test and ELISA Method.
