Why is the NON GMO Label Important?

As it is known, genetically modified organisms GMOs are plants or animals whose genes have been changed or mutated in a laboratory. Certificates and labels such as NON GMO or GMO Free are there to indicate to the consumer that the product is not related to genetic modification.

Why is the NON GMO Label Important?

Mutating an organism's genes results in an organism with a new and "desirable trait" that does not occur naturally, but can be anything from herbicide resistance to growth, growth in adverse weather conditions, and more.

The NON GMO and GMO Free certification program is designed to assist organizations that produce or wish to supply non-genetically modified crops. These certificates and labels are evaluated and issued by international independent and third-party organizations.

In line with EU directives, there is a labeling requirement for products with a GMO presence above the limit value of 0,9 percent. With certification programs such as NON GMO or GMO Free, non-GMO products below the 0,9 percent threshold are certified and applied to all processes in the supply chain.

For products that have successfully passed the testing and evaluation stages after the NON GMO certificate application, if necessary, verification is made whether the GMO status complies with the requirements through on-site inspections/audits, sampling and documentation reviews. Certificates are prepared and delivered for suitable products.

NON GMO or GMO FREE certification means that a product has been produced without genetic engineering and its ingredients are not derived from genetically modified organisms.

After the certification is completed, the NON GMO label can be used on the product and this label creates the opportunity for the consumer to reach the non-GMO product at a glance.
