NON GMO Livestock Certificate

The use of GMOs in livestock is a highly controversial issue. For example, GMO feeds have been used in livestock for decades in the USA. More than two-thirds of genetically modified corn and more than half of soybeans are used for animal feed.

In addition, GMOs have never been found in milk, meat or eggs from animals fed GMO feed, but the long-term status of animals fed GMO feed or consuming GMO ingredients in various ways remains unclear.

In the food sector, in line with the increasing consumer demand, many companies are in search of non-GMO meat and meat products. In this context, the producers in the livestock sector show a demand for NON GMO or GMO Free labeled livestock.

The NON GMO Livestock certificate or label indicates that the beef and feed are produced in a non-GMO manner, minimizing potential cross-contamination with GMO-derived products during production.

Products and their ingredients are either tested for the presence of DNA from genetically modified organisms or inspected to ensure they do not contain genetically engineered products.

Because GMOs are so widely used in the food industry, NON GMO labels cannot guarantee that products are completely free of GMO residues; however, tested certified feed samples should routinely contain less than 5% content of GMOs. For components that do not contain sufficiently robust DNA for testing, manufacturing processes should be audited to demonstrate a low risk of contamination.

It should be noted that non-GMO produce is not necessarily organic, but not all organics are GMOs. In addition, assessments under the certification program do not address pesticides or other chemicals used for feed or medicine in the animals themselves.
