For many cows and cattle, genetically modified feed will be their only source of feed throughout their lives. Some cattle receive grain rations that may contain corn or soybeans, both of which are genetically modified hybrids and varieties. Cattle will also eat alfalfa hay. Alfalfa is another crop with a genetically modified option.

Organisms whose genetic makeup has been unnaturally modified. Basically, DNA from a different species is injected into plant species. The injected species can come from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals, and even humans. With this kind of engineering, unknown consequences can cause future problems for our health.

The debate over whether GMO foods are safe continues, with many studies saying that GMO foods are just as safe as non-GMO foods. However, it is clear that GMO foods are very difficult for the environment. This is mostly because GMO plants are no more productive than non-GMO plants unless the plants are sprayed with a lot of the herbicide glyphosate designed to withstand it. This has resulted in the emergence of "super weeds" resistant to glyphosate.

For a meat product to be considered non-GMO, it must not be fed a non-GMO, all-natural vegetarian (organic plant-based) diet.
