NON GMO Seafood Certificate

GMOs can be found in almost all foods today. Even as it may seem unbelievable, genetic modification can now be found even in seafood.

NON GMO Seafood Certificate

As a knowledgeable and conscious consumer, you may wonder how a seafood product can be GMO since the fish comes directly from the ocean. However, this can be a very complex issue.

Many fish or seafood products we buy often have additional ingredients that are the main culprits of GMO. For example, if you are a sushi eater, you may be familiar with surimi, a key ingredient in the California roll, a form of sushi. If you look closely, you can see that this sushi ingredient has a GMO risk component. Substances with a high GMO risk may include fish protein, sugar, rapeseed, egg whites and soy.

But unfortunately, it doesn't end there because many minor ingredients such as flavorings and coloring can also be derived from GMOs. Even genetically modified fish have become a new reality for shoppers.

The introduction of genetically modified salmon to the market has been on the agenda for several years. Of course, there are some concerns with these salmon. First, DNA is incredibly dynamic and off-target effects can occur when DNA is added or deleted.

This is one reason why GMOs took so long to create. Scientists have a constant need to navigate around the unintended consequences of the additions they make in the genetic engineering process. Understandably, many consumers choose to forego these experimental foods.
