Is GMO Harmful to Health?

GMOs are relatively new, and like anything new, there are conflicting views on many issues regarding the use of these plants. One area that has received much attention is whether these GMO plants and foods containing them are safe.

Is GMO Harmful to Health?

There is currently no data on the harmfulness of GMO consumption to human health. Besides, the main concern is the problems that may arise in the coming years. So how can we know them?

GMOs have undergone a more detailed evaluation than any other plant group we consume. In almost all cases, GMOs differ from a traditional plant by the addition of only one or two genes that produce one or two new proteins. The origin and function of these proteins are well understood.

For example, proteins are examined to make sure they do not have any properties that could cause allergic reactions. The United States' number one source for independent, objective advice to the nation on science and technology matters, the National Academy of Sciences has concluded that GMOs are safe for human health. The same conclusion has been reached by many prestigious health and scientific organizations from all over the world.

In addition to all these, the debate on whether consuming GMO foods instead of non-GMO foods is harmful to health is still ongoing in the scientific community. However, it is thought that this situation may change positively or negatively as technology develops and becomes more sophisticated in the future.
