GMO Free Label

To meet the increasing demand for NON GMO products, many manufacturers are turning to non-GMO labels. However, the majority of these labels on the market do not make this claim based on any certification program.

GMO Free Label

Manufacturers who randomly add labels such as GMO Free or NON Gmo to their products in order to get a share of the market cause market distortions. Non-GMO claims must be verified by a third-party authorized, independent, internationally accredited organization. Otherwise, the claims have no validity and create distrust for the consumer.

Although GMO Free is an established quality standard in a growing number of European countries and is equally important to consumers, manufacturers and retailers, it is far from uniform, even the term GMO Free varies from country to country.

Different national laws and/or industry agreements lead to inconsistent production and monitoring specifications in different countries, leading to increased distortions in the EU single market. Bilateral negotiations aimed at achieving mutual recognition of non-GMO standards are time-consuming and costly and often not possible, especially if different criteria are regulated by country-specific legislation.

It is therefore crucial to develop and implement a common European approach to non-GMO labeling. Such a joint approach will support food and feed manufacturers, processors and marketers in a growing market of GMO Free products. It will enable them to enjoy equal requirements for production and certification for food and feed. It will also increase consumer confidence as consumers expect transparent, comparable and reliable criteria for food and feed labeling.
