Non-NON GMO Products

GMO crops have been grown on a commercial scale for over 20 years. The seeds used to grow the vast majority of corn, soybeans, rapeseed (to make canola oil), and sugar beets in the United States today have been genetically engineered to be tolerant by genetic engineering.

Non-NON GMO Products

Another trait genetically engineered into food products is pest resistance. These varieties have been genetically engineered with the genes of a soil bacterium that produces a protein that is toxic to insects. Genes are changed and added to the genetic code of plants so that the plant produces its own pesticide.

Government agencies that oversee food labeling voluntarily allow labels such as NON GMO or GMO Free and strongly encourage food manufacturers that voluntarily label their products as GMO Free to verify this claim with third parties. However, this advice to substantiate the claim is not legally enforceable.

The main crops covered by NON GMO today are soybeans, corn, alfalfa, papaya, canola, cotton, sugar beet, summer squash, apples, potatoes and rice. These listed plants are produced as GMO and constitute 99 percent of GMO products. However, considering the components obtained from these products, the number of foodstuffs containing GMOs is quite high.

Some of the products that are not covered by NON GMO certification are:

  • Products prohibited for sale in the relevant country
  • Some drugs and medicinal products
  • live animals
  • Synthetic pesticides
  • Substances controlled within the framework of current legal regulations
  • Prohibited inputs and ingredients such as cloned or genetically modified animals, including their progeny and derivatives, fertilizers and synthetic biology products derived from these animals
