Research on public perception of GM foods found that 52 percent of respondents would be less likely to consume a product when they learn that it has been genetically modified.

According to survey findings conducted by an international research company, more than half of people will stop consuming a food item if they learn it is genetically modified (GM).

44 percent of respondents rated their perceptions of GM foods as 'negative' or 'extremely negative', while only 12 percent had 'positive' or 'extremely positive' views. 

Questioning 1.139 people across the UK about their thoughts on GM foods, the survey also found a widespread lack of understanding among people of all ages about the safety of GM crops. 

About a quarter of people reported believing that at least one of the 1990s mad cow disease epidemic, the 2000s foot-and-mouth disease, the 2005 E. Most of the events mentioned above were caused by GM foods. 

It is thought that more needs to be done by food manufacturers and the government to address this negative perception, create regulations and educate individuals.
