Why is Non-GMO Feed Important?

If you're eating dairy, eggs, meat or other animal products, the biggest way to help protect a GMO-free future is to choose products labeled NON GMO.

Why is Non-GMO Feed Important?

If you're wondering why what an animal eats matters, consider this: nearly all GMOs are designed for one or a combination of two traits.

These features are where a plant can be directly sprayed with a chemical pesticide such as Roundup and survive and herbicide tolerance, or insecticide production, where a plant produces the Bt toxin so if an insect eats any part of the plant it will do so. From a sustainability standpoint, these traits can have serious consequences for the environment and our food system.

Currently, there is no way to test an animal's products to find out how much of their feed is GMO. In other words, you could test the milk of a cow fed a 100% GMO diet and get a "not detected" result.

If you want to know if an animal eats GMOs, you need to test the feed itself. The challenges of securing non-GMO feed, conducting continuous testing, and keeping the supply chain separate and traceable are significant, but an increasing number of companies are taking steps to meet this commitment.

When you see the NON GMO label on dairy, eggs or meat, you can be sure that the animal feed has been tested, and this is something no other label guarantees.
