GMO and Environmental Concerns

Key concerns with GMOs include allergies, cancer and environmental issues, all of which can affect the consumer. Although current research suggests few risks, longer-term research is needed.

GMO and Environmental Concerns

Growing GM foods is easier and less costly for farmers, making them cheaper for the consumer. GMO techniques can also improve the nutrients, flavor and appearance of foods. For these reasons, it is beneficial for the farmer in many ways.

While GM crops may be suitable for farmers, there are environmental concerns as well. Most GMO crops are resistant to herbicides such as Roundup. This means that farmers can use Roundup without fear of damaging their crops.

However, an increasing number of weeds have developed resistance to this herbicide over time. This resulted in more Roundup being sprayed on crops to kill resistant weeds as they could affect crop harvesting.

Roundup and its active ingredient glyphosate are subject to controversy, as animal and test-tube studies have linked them to a variety of diseases.

Still, a review of multiple studies concluded that the low amounts of glyphosate found in GMO foods are safe for human consumption.

GMO crops also allow for less pesticide application, which is good for the environment. However, longer-term human research is needed.
