How Much Are GMOs in Our Food?

While the use of GMOs is less common in Europe and other countries, in the US, few crops are almost entirely genetically modified. These include corn, soybeans, canola, sugar beets, cotton, papaya and to a lesser extent alfalfa.

How Much Are GMOs in Our Food?

While these products may never appear on your dinner plate, these products are ubiquitous in our food supply.

They occur in processed foods as sugars, syrups, oils, emulsifiers, and other additives. It is estimated that 80% of processed foods contain GMOs.

Meanwhile, maize and soy make up the bulk of the feed consumed by cattle, swine and poultry, while alfalfa is an important component of feed for dairy cows. In other words: most of the animal products you eat are linked to GMOs.

Today, new GM vegetable varieties and even a new GM salmon variety are entering the market. In short, the markets are full of GMO products.

Consumers are hearing conflicting messages from industry advocates who are adamant about GMO safety on the one hand, and from consumer advocates on the other who are concerned that GMOs present new food toxins, allergens or diseases.

The consumer should be skeptical of general statements about the safety of GMOs, positive or negative, unless certainty is presented.
