Is Seedless Watermelon GMO?

Like all living things, the crops we eat contain chromosomes in the nucleus of their cells. This is where their genetic information is stored.

Is Seedless Watermelon GMO?

Different organisms have different numbers of chromosomes and different numbers of copies of these chromosomes. For example, most humans are diploid creatures. We usually have two copies of 46 chromosomes, 23 in total.

Seedless watermelons are triploid, meaning they have three copies of their chromosomes instead of two. This makes them sterile which means of course there are no seeds to choose from.

These watermelons are created by crossing a common diploid watermelon (just like most people, two copies of each chromosome) with a tetraploid watermelon (four copies). Each plant transmits half of its genetic information, so genius would end up without three pairs of chromosomes and a viable seed. Interestingly, our typical (Cavendish) bananas are seedless for the same reason: they're just triploid plantains.

As some of you have asked, it should be noted that cube-shaped watermelons are also not genetically modified. These are grown only in a cube-shaped container. Hybrid fruits such as tangelo and tangerine are also non-GMO; They are produced by traditional hybridization methods.
