Safety and Concerns About GMOs

Although current research suggests that GMO foods are safe, there are some concerns about their long-term safety and environmental impact.

Safety and Concerns About GMOs

One of the main concerns with GMO consumption is allergies. There is some concern that GM foods may trigger an allergic reaction.

This is because GMO foods contain foreign genes, so some people worry that they harbor genes from foods that can cause an allergic reaction.

A study in the mid-1990s found that adding a protein from Brazil nuts to GM soybeans can trigger an allergic reaction in people sensitive to Brazil nuts. However, after scientists discovered it, they quickly abandoned this GMO food.

While allergy concerns are valid, there have been no reports of allergic reactions to GMO foods on the market at this time.

According to the FDA, researchers who develop GMO foods are running tests to make sure allergens are not transferred from one food to another.

Additionally, research has shown that GM foods are no more likely to trigger allergies than their non-GMO counterparts.

However, if you are allergic to soy, both GM and non-GMO soy products will cause an allergic reaction.

Another GMO concern is cancer. Similarly, there is a widespread concern that GM foods may aid the progression of cancers.

Because cancers are caused by DNA mutations, some people fear that eating foods with added genes might affect your DNA.

This concern may stem in part from an early mouse study that linked GMO intake to a higher risk of tumors and premature death. However, this study was later withdrawn as it was poorly designed.

Currently, no human studies link GMO intake to cancers. The American Cancer Society (ACS) stated that there is no evidence to link GMO food intake to increased or decreased cancer risk.

Still, no long-term human studies are available. Therefore, more long-term human studies are needed.
