Curious About GMOs

What we commonly refer to as "GMOs" are plants (or less commonly animals) that have been molecularly modified through bioengineering.

Overview

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional hybridization methods.

The World Health Organization suggests that each genetically modified food should be evaluated separately for its own safety, however, the perception is created in the international market that GMO foods have passed the safety assessments and have no adverse effects on human health.

Today, genetic modification studies continue extremely rapidly in food production, and manufacturers do not constantly talk about the benefits of genetically modified foods. However, scientists have yet to reach a consensus on the safety of these products.

GMOs are living beings whose genetic code has been modified in some way. While traditional breeding, which has been going on for centuries, involves mixing whole genes from two different sources, producing GMOs is much more targeted. Instead of crossing two plants in the field, they insert a gene or two into individual cells in a lab.

In the absence of reliable independent long-term nutritional studies, the safety of GMOs is unknown. As a result, consumers are taking matters into their own hands and choosing to forgo the GMO experiment.

Sixty-four countries worldwide, including Australia, Japan and all countries in the European Union, require the labeling of genetically modified foods. Canada does not require any GMO labels.

Most packaged foods contain ingredients from corn, soy, canola and sugar beet, and the vast majority of these products are genetically modified.

Concern about GMOs remains. A peer-reviewed article published in a scientifically respected journal in 2019 showed that many people still worry about them or oppose the use of genetically modified foods despite agreement among scientists that they are safe to consume.
